This month, "first fire" will take place on the two generating units of Phase I at the Rock Springs Generation project in Maryland. ConEd Development, a wholly owned subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc (NYSE: ED) (New York City, New York) with Old Dominion Electric Cooperative will own the $200 million power plant near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. The 1,020MW simple-cycle plant will provide power to member cooperatives on the Delmarva Peninsula during hours of peak demand.

The plant will consist of six natural gas-fired combustion turbines that will be installed in three phases. Generation from each phase will total 340MW. Phase I is scheduled to come online by the first of the year and Phase II is scheduled to begin operation by the summer of 2003. The company is considering new partners for Phase III.

Burns and Roe (Oradell, New Jersey), a leading power plant E&C firm, is the engineering contractor while Frucon Construction Corp (St. Louis, Missouri) is responsible for construction and start-up services.
