PCS Phosphate Plans Fourth Purified Phosphoric Acid Unit

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). PCS Phosphate Company, Incorporated (PCS) (Northbrook, Illinois) plans to install a fourth production unit at their Aurora, North Carolina site pending completion of the third production unit, which is currently under construction. The third unit has a planned startup date during the third quarter of 2003. Construction for the fourth unit is slated to begin during the fourth quarter of 2003 and produce purified phosphoric acid (PPA) when complete in early 2005.

Jacobs Engineering Group, Incorporated (NYSE: JEC) (Pasadena, California) is providing engineering and construction services for the number three unit and anticipates providing the same services for the fourth unit once approved.

PCS is a subsidiary of Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, Incorporated (NYSE: POT) (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and the world's third largest phosphate producer. The Aurora site is the home of the largest integrated phosphate mining and chemical plant in the world. North America provides the largest market for phosphate products, primarily in the form of fertilizers that benefit crops such as corn, wheat, oranges, soybeans and cotton. The PPA product that will be produced in the fourth production unit will be used in food and beverage products, metal treatment, detergents and electronics. The finished PPA product is obtained when sulfuric acid, which is also produced at the Aurora, site, is mixed with phosphate rock found in underground ore deposits.
