Rio Polimeros (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) is finalizing financing contracts with Brazilian Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social (BNDES) for construction of a petrochemical complex in Duque de Caxias, Brazil utilizing natural gas as its feedstock. A consortium of ABB-Lummus (Bloomfield, N.J.) and Snamprogetti (Milan, Italy) will function as the turnkey contractor. Construction is set to begin during the first quarter of 2002 with completion slated for 2004. ABB-Lummus will provide technology and construct the 500,000 ton per year ethylene unit. Snamprogetti will engineer and construct the 540,000 ton per year Polyethylene (PE) unit utilizing UNIPOL PE process technology.
Rio Polimeros, Consorcio Rio Eteno e Rio Polimeros Ltda, is a venture of Unipar-Uniao de Industrias Petroquimicas SA, Suzano Papel e Celulose, Petrobras and BNDES.
