Sam Bertron Power Plant Kicks Off Outage Season with Boiler Rebuild

Researched by Industrial info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 826-megawatt (MW) Sam Bertron Power Station (Deer Park, Texas) has begun its fall maintenance outages. The facility consists of four gas-fired units that became operational in the 1960s. All three Alstom and one Riley Stoker front-fired boilers will be rebuilt and are expected to be completed by next summer.

The scope of work on all the units is primarily the same. All major boiler components will be replaced, including the casings, water walls, buckstays, reheaters, tubes, expansion joints and miscellaneous parts.

Maintenance on the 225-MW Unit 3 began a couple of weeks ago and will be followed by Unit 4 (also 225 MW) in mid-November. Completion of both units is expected toward the end of December. The two 188-MW Units 1 and 2 are scheduled for the spring of 2008.

The Sam Bertron plant is owned and operated by NRG Texas LLC (Houston, Texas), which also owns the 1,713-MW Limestone Electric Generating Station (Jewett, Texas), the 1,259-MW T. H. Wharton Power Station (Houston, Texas) and the 2,295-MW Cedar Bayou Power Station (Baytown, Texas).
