Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). A total investment of $260 million will be spent by SaskPower (Regina, Saskatchewan) to rebuild Unit #1 and Unit #2 at the Poplar River Power Station. Project completion is expected in the summer of 2008.
The two-unit facility is located in Coronach, Saskatchewan, and consists of two 294-megawatt Hitachi turbine/generator sets, one Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boiler and a Babcock & Wilcox opposed-fired boiler. Unit #1 came online in 1981 and Unit #2 followed in 1983.
The two major players involved with the rebuild project are Hitachi Canadian Industries, Limited (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), and Babcock & Wilcox Canada (Cambridge, Ontario). A $30 million contract was awarded to Hitachi to install the high-pressure turbine rotors, reblading, casings, as well as other turbine and generator components. Babcock & Wilcox was awarded a $40 million contract to replace the superheater, reheater, and economizer.
The work will be performed during two 3-month long outages scheduled for Unit #1 in the spring of 2006, and Unit #2 in the spring of 2008.
SaskPowers two other coal-fired power plants in the region are the 874-megawatt Boundary Dam Power Station (Estavan, Saskatchewan) and the 300-megawatt Shand Power Station, also in Estevan, Saskatchewan.
