SCA Tissue Machine Under Construction in Alabama

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SCA Tissue North America (Neenah, Wisconsin), one of the three largest producers of Away-From-Home tissue products in North America, is in the middle of building a tissue machine at a mill in Alabama. The $145 million investment, announced in early 2007, includes a building addition, a 70,000-ton-per-year tissue machine and auxiliary equipment at the Barton mill.

Construction started last fall, and the new machine is scheduled to produce paper by the end of 2008. S J Baisch and Associates (Kaukauna, Wisconsin) is the engineering firm of record, while and C R Meyer and Sons (Oshkosh, Wisconsin), has construction management responsibilities.

Operations at the Barton site began in 2003 producing 100,000 tons of tissue for disposable napkins, towels, and bath tissue. Approximately 320 of the mill's 400 employees are union members. After adding the new paper machine, the plant will increase annual tissue production to 170,000 tons. The new paper machine would help replace the tissue that the plant is purchases from other manufacturing facilities.

In North America, SCA has production facilities and distribution centers in South Glens Falls, New York, Alsip, Illinois, Bellemont and Flagstaff, Arizona, and Neenah and Menasha, Wisconsin. SCA North America is a business unit of (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget) (Stockholm, Sweden), which translates to Swedish Cellulose Incorporated.
