SembCorp to Design Huntsman's Wilton U.K. LDPE Plant and Boost Utility's Power

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). SembCorp Simon-Carves Limited has been awarded the contract to design the world's largest single-stream 400,000 ton per annum low-density polyethylene plant by Huntsman (Salt Lake City, Utah). The company is the process engineering arm of SembCorp Engineers & Constructors, which claims to be the largest engineering and construction group in Southeast Asia. SembCorp Simon-Carves has designed and supplied 75 LDPE streams throughout the world claiming six of the last eleven LDPE plants commissioned since 1997. Huntsman has also announced that it has signed a contract to purchase a technology license from ExxonMobil Chemical (NYSE:XOM ) (Irving, Texas) for the $200 million plant. ExxonMobil has also signed a pre-marketing contract on LDPE product from a plant, which is under construction at the Wilton International site at Teeside, in northeast U.K.

Another SembCorp Industries company, SembCorp Utilities UK (Middlesbrough, UK), has recently commissioned a new 42 MW gas turbine and steam boiler plant, boosting the generating capacity of the Wilton power station to 197 MW. The new unit $26 million unit replaces an existing oil-fired boiler and maintains the station's steam production capacity at above 600 tons per hour.

This is the first large-scale investment in new equipment at the power station in sixteen years. The unit has been serving the industrial site for more than 50 years. Currently major client companies at the industrial site include INVISTA (Wichita, Kansas), Dow (NYSE:DOW ) (Midland, Michigan) and DuPont SA (NYSE:DD ) (Wilmington, Delaware), in addition to Huntsman.

SembCorp's in-house project team worked with Aker Kvaerner (Norway) engineering services, which delivered the 'power island' to Sembcorp Solutions management. The new unit has a natural gas feed and is based on 'dry low-NOx' technology and with the closure of the oil-fired boiler emissions from the power station will be further reduced. The power station is already relatively efficient, by virtue of the fact that much of the steam output is re-used. The reliability and flexibility of uninterrupted power and steam supplies to customers will also be enhanced.

SembCorp's main utility assets on Teeside include the Wilton power station and water treatment plant. Services carried out by the company include asset protection and logistics, pipelines, and high voltage electrical maintenance and management. A range of environmental and analytical services are also provided. The company owns a major part of the development land on the 2,000-acre site, which it markets under the 'Wilton International' banner.
