SGL Fibers Selects General Contractor, Breaks Ground on Washington Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers LLC, a joint venture of SGL Carbon SE (ETR:SGL) (Wiesbaden, Germany) and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (ETR:BMW) (BMW) (Munich, Germany), has awarded a general contractor and begun site preparation on a $100 million, 150,000-square-foot carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Moses Lake, Washington.

SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers LLC selected Lydig Construction Incorporated (Spokane, Washington) from a shortlist of five general contractors. Case, Lowe & Hart Incorporated (Ogden, Utah) will continue to provide architectural and engineering services for the project. The team broke ground earlier this month. For additional information, see June 11, 2010, article - SGL Fibers Narrows General Contractor Selection for Plant in Washington.

While some subcontractor contracts have already been awarded, interested subcontractors and suppliers are encouraged to make contact with the project managers listed on IIR's PEC Report and complete a qualification form located on Lydig's website.

The scope of the project includes, but is not limited to the following: fabricated steel creel system, four oxidation ovens, 116 winders, surface treatment plant with associated equipment, nitrogen plant, concrete formwork, reinforcement, cast-in-place concrete, structural steel framing, steel decking, metal fabrications, metal stairs, pipe and tube railing, metal gratings, rough carpentry, sheathing, interior architectural work, bituminous damp-proofing, thermal insulation, metal roof and wall panels, thermoplastic polyolefin roofing, sheet metal flashing and trim, hollow metal doors and frames, flush wood doors, overhead coiling doors, sectional doors, aluminum-framed entrances and storefronts, aluminum windows, Sunoptics skylights, loading dock equipment, wet-pipe sprinkler systems, electric-drive centrifugal fire pumps, pressure water coolers, hydronic piping and pumps, natural gas piping, centrifugal HVAC fans and power ventilators, laboratory fume hoods, cooling towers, electric boilers, and scroll water chillers.

The carbon fiber plant will create 80 jobs. The facility will enable both companies to manufacture ultra-light-weight, carbon fiber-reinforced plastics for use in future vehicle concepts like the BMW Group's upcoming Megacity vehicle, which is BMW's hybrid-electric car, announced in February this year. BMW plans on using carbon fiber-reinforced plastic throughout the entire vehicle, because the material is both light and strong. The vehicles, set to be launched sometime in 2013, will be assembled in Leipzig, Germany.

The project is expected to be completed by July 2011, but full plant commissioning could take several additional months.
