Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sinohydro Engineering Bureau 8 Company Limited (Changsha, Hunan), a subsidiary of the newly established Power Construction Corporation of China (Beijing), signed the civil construction contract for the upper reservoir works (C1 Bid) for the State Grid Corporation of China's (SGCC) (Beijing) Xianju Pumped-Storage Power Station in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang province, on November 12, 2011.
According to the contract, Sinohydro Bureau 8 will be responsible for the construction of the main dam and an auxiliary dam; the cleaning of the reservoir basin; and the seepage control for the reservoir basin, the inlet gates, the outlet gates, and the gate shafts for the upper reservoir. The total amount of the contract will be about $54 million.
Xianju Pumped-Storage Power Station is on Yongan Creek, in Qiushan Town in the Zhejiang province, and belongs to the load center of southeast Zhejiang. The power station will be furnished with four hydraulic turbine-pump reversible generating units, each of 375 megawatts (MW). The total installed capacity of the power station will be 1,500 MW. State Grid Xin Yuan Holdings Company Limited (Beijing), a fully owned subsidiary of SGCC, is responsible for the construction and future operations.
As one of the largest pumped-storage units in China, the project will be an important peak and frequency regulation power source in the East China Grid. Upon completion, the project will be able to generate 2.51 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity at peak hours and consume about 3.26 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity for pumping in valley hours. It also will save about 98,700 metric tons of standard coal in Zhejiang Grid every year.
The project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission in January 2010. Construction of the project began on December 17, 2010. Under the mandate of the GSCC, CETIC International Tendering Company Limited (Beijing) issued the invitation for bids on civil contractors for the main works of Xianju Pumped-Storage Power Station in September 2011. The civil construction works were divided into four bids: the Upper Reservoir Works (C1), the Power Diversion System Works (C2), the Underground Powerhouse and Tailrace System Works (C3), and the Lower Reservoir Works (C1).
According to the schedule, all four units of the project will be operational by the end of 2015.
