Reports related to this article:

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Magnolia Nitrogen Idaho LLC (Magnida) (Houston, Texas) is not a name frequently heard in the agricultural chemical industry, but the startup company has its sights set on entering the arena.

Magnida is proposing to build a $2 billion fertilizer plant in American Falls, Idaho. The facility will produce approximately 2,500 tons per day of ammonia, 4,100 tons per day of urea, and 2,900 tons per day of urea ammonium nitrate, among other fertilizer products. The project already has cleared some initial hurdles and has been issued air permits. A final investment decision is expected by the end of October.

Even with an influx of agricultural projects aimed at increasing capacity, this is the only proposed fertilizer plant in the Rocky Mountains region. Most of the expansion projects are being planned in the U.S. Midwest and Southwest regions. Industrial Info is tracking 109 capital projects with a total investment of about $25 billion.

Several companies are bidding to perform engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the Magnida project, including Bechtel Corporation (San Francisco, California) and a consortium between KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston) and TIC, the latter a subsidiary of Kiewit Company (Omaha, Nebraska).

A decision on the contract will be made no later than January 2015, with contractor mobilization on site in late summer or early fall to begin site work, if the investor and owners give the project the green light.
