Target Breaks Ground on New $90 Million Food Distribution Center in Iowa

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Earth moving is underway at the site of a new cold storage food distribution center in Cedar Falls, Iowa by Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) (Minneapolis, Minnesota). Earlier this year, the company announced plans for a new 450,000-500,000 square foot perishables food distribution center that would store frozen and refrigerated foods and fresh produce for primary distribution to stores throughout the Midwest. Plans call for the facility to be operational by the fall of 2009.

The new facility is being constructed on an 80-acre site across the street from the company’s 1.4 million square foot dry goods distribution center in the Cedar Falls Industrial Park.

Target has contracted Minneapolis based Leo A Daly Architects and Ryan Companies to provide design and construction services, respectively.

The building will be comprised of approximately 110,000 square feet freezer space and a 220,000 square feet cooler, with the remaining space for office and loading areas. The building phase of the project has an estimated investment of $35 million, while refrigeration and other equipment cost could go up to $55 million.

Target along with Ryan Construction is currently constructing a similar perishable foods distribution center in Lake City, Florida that is scheduled to be operational by the spring of 2008.
