Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tennessee has 287 active industrial projects totaling more than $23 billion, making it the second-largest state in the U.S. Southeast for industrial project activity after Georgia. The Southeast also includes Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

The Power Industry is No. 1 in the state, accounting for a little more than half of the total project value, with 42 projects totaling $13.3 billion.

Regional power generation giant Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) has 20 projects totaling about $8 billion in the state. Construction began last year on a $1 billion environmental retrofit of the company's Gallatin Power Station. The company is putting in environmental controls to reduce NOx, SO2 and mercury emissions. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016. Industrial Info first reported on this project in 2007, when it was in equipment studies. Since that time, the cost of the project has tripled.

Other industrial with significant spending in the state include Metals & Minerals, Industrial Manufacturing, Pharma-Biotech, Chemical Processing and Food & Beverage.

In Memphis, site preparation is under way for a $55 million peanut butter manufacturing plant addition at the JM Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) (Orrville, Ohio) plant in Tennessee. JM Smucker is constructing the new plant at an existing distribution center across the street from the company's jam and jelly manufacturing plant. The Dennis Group LLC (Springfield, Massachusetts) is the design-build company for the plant.
