Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo implemented a stay-at-home order Tuesday morning for the Texas county, which includes Houston, the largest city in Texas and fourth-largest U.S. city. Harris County joins California, New York and many other parts of the U.S. in attempting to slow the spread of COVID-19. Industrial Info is tracking more than $21.4 billion worth of active projects in Harris County, more than half of which are in the Chemical Processing Industry.
Industrial Info also is tracking 768 operational plants with nearly 5,000 functional management contacts in Harris County.
On Monday, the states of Louisiana, Kentucky and Ohio began implementing their own stay-at-home (also called shelter-in-place) measures, and were joined by Delaware on Tuesday morning. Philadelphia and St. Louis have orders that went into effect Monday, followed by Kansas City, Missouri, on Tuesday.
Residents in such areas are allowed to visit grocery stores, clinics and pharmacies, which can stay open. Other "non-essential" businesses will be closed, although most affected areas are allowing employees to pick up supplies so they can work from home. Schools in these areas will be closed as well; dates vary place-to-place for when classes are expected to resume.
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Connecticut and Illinois are among the other states to have announced shelter-in-place directives.
Globally, close to 340,000 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Monday morning, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and more than 14,700 persons have died. In the U.S. alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 15,219 persons have tested positive, with 201 deaths as of Monday morning.
As of Sunday evening, Harris County has seen 51 people test positive for COVID-19. One person has died.
Four employees at the Harris County Sheriff's Office already have tested positive for COVID-19, according to KHOU-11, as have eight local firefighters. COVID-19 testing sites are being set up across the county, although health officials are trying to limit the service to "high-risk" persons: first responders, persons with chronic illnesses and persons over the age of 65, according to KHOU-11.
