Texas Utility Evaluates Major Nuclear Power Plant Expansion

TXU Power Corporation, a subsidiary of TXU Corporation (NYSE:TXU) (Dallas, Texas), is conducting studies to add up to six additional nuclear units in Texas by 2020. TXU currently has two units for a total of about 2,300 megawatts at its Comanche Peak Nuclear Station near Glen Rose, in Somervell County, Texas.

The two units currently at Comanche Peak utilize Westinghouse Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) technology to drive two Siemens Power Corporation steam turbines each (~1150 MW). TXU is looking at putting the first two additional units at the Comanche Peak site in 2014 and 2015, and are doing site studies for the other four units in 2016 to 2020. The current nuclear reactor technologies being studied for use in the United States allow for production of enough steam to drive steam turbine/generators from ~1,100 megawatts to ~1,600 megawatts, so capacity for TXU nuclear could go from 2,300 MW to as high as 11,900MW.

TXU's nuclear generation plans are part of more than 36,000 megawatts of proposed new generation units of all fuel types planned in Texas.
