TransAlta Awards Contract for Scrubber Addition

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Inc.; Houston, Texas). TransAlta Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) (NYSE: TAC) (TSE: TA) awarded a consortium of Stone & Webster (Denver, Colorado) a division of The Shaw Group (NYSE: SGR) (Baton Rouge, La.) and Alstom Power (NYSE: ALS) (Windsor, Connecticut) the engineering & construction contract for a $200 million project to install two Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) units on two 730 mega-watt (MW) coal-fired units. Civil construction began in 2000. Unit #2 had its tie-in outage 2Q01 & unit #1 is scheduled for its tie-in outage April to June 2002. These two FGD units will insure that the plant meets SO2 & opacity regulations mandated by the state of Washington & the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act.

The addition of FGD's and other emission reduction equipment will become an expenditure that most coal-fired power producers will have to deal with as tougher emission standards come into play, states John Deming, Power Group Industry Specialist with Industrialinfo.com.

TransAlta Corporation is a generation, transmission & distribution Investor Owned Utility (IOU) that has over $7 billion in assets and 8,000MW of generating capacity. TransAlta's growth is focused on developing coal and gas-fired generation in Canada, the United States & Mexico.
