Solar projects abound in the region. Among these is Sustainable Power Group's (Salt Lake City, Utah) planned 500-megawatt (MW) Highlander solar farm near Thornburg, Virginia. Swinerton Renewable Energy is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $750 million. Construction is set to begin late in the third quarter and be completed in early 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Also in Virginia, Holocene Clean Energy Incorporated (Raleigh, North Carolina) plans to begin construction on the 15-MW Twittys Creek solar farm near Keysville. The project is being built on 70 acres and will use more than 59,000 ground-mounted, fixed tilt photovoltaic panels to supply the town of Keysville and neighboring communities. Construction is planned to kick off this summer and be completed before the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Solar is not the only form of renewable energy project planned to kick off in the region in the quarter. Near Suffolk, Virginia, General Power Corporation (Midlothian, Virginia) plans to begin work on a 17-MW landfill gas-to-energy center. The plant will include two 4.1-MW methane-fired combustion turbine-generators and an 8.8-MW steam turbine-generator. The project is expected to kick off this summer and take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In North Carolina, NTE Energy (Saint Augustine, Florida) plans to begin construction of a 500-MW natural gas-fired power plant near Reidsville. Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) is providing EPC. The project has an estimated TIV of $510 million and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

At the Virgil C. Summer nuclear power station in South Carolina, where a previous grassroot project was cancelled, SCANA Corporation (NYSE:SCG) (Cayce, South Carolina) plans to have a refueling outage for Unit 1 in the quarter. The refueling, inspection and repairs to the 966-MW unit is expected to take 42 days. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. In Huntersville, South Carolina, Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) plans to perform a refueling outage on Unit 2 of its McGuire Nuclear Power Station.
