Solar projects abound in the region. Among these is Sustainable Power Group's (Salt Lake City, Utah) planned 500-megawatt (MW) Highlander solar farm near Thornburg, Virginia. Swinerton Renewable Energy is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $750 million. Also in Virginia, Holocene Clean Energy Incorporated (Raleigh, North Carolina) plans to begin construction on the 15-MW Twittys Creek solar farm near Keysville. The project is being built on 70 acres and will use more than 59,000 ground-mounted, fixed tilt photovoltaic panels to supply the town of Keysville and neighboring communities. Near Suffolk, Virginia, General Power Corporation (Midlothian, Virginia) plans to begin work on a 17-MW landfill gas-to-energy center. The plant will include two 4.1-MW methane-fired combustion turbine-generators and an 8.8-MW steam turbine-generator. The project is expected to kick off this summer and take about a year to complete. In North Carolina, NTE Energy (Saint Augustine, Florida) plans to begin construction of a 500-MW natural gas-fired power plant near Reidsville.
