Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.7 billion in planned Power Industry project starts in the Mid-Atlantic market region, which includes Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Virginia, thanks to a large natural gas-fired project and several solar power projects, leads the region in terms of project value, with $2.9 billion in planned project starts.

Perhaps the biggest project to kick off in the region next quarter is Balico LLC's (Herndon, Virginia) planned 1,650-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired, combined cycle plant near Charles City, Virginia. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $1.3 billion. Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). Virginia also is home to several planned solar photovoltaic projects. Among these is Dominion Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) Colonial Trail West solar farm near Surry. The facility will have a generating capacity of 150 MW. Strata Solar LLC (Chapel Hill, North Carolina) will perform EPC on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $250 million. In Mechanicsville, Virginia, SunEnergy 1 LLC (Mooresville, North Carolina) is gearing up to begin construction on a 20-MW solar facility. The plant will be constructed on a 250-acre site and will use 93,000 photovoltaic solar modules. Construction is set to be completed by the end of 2019. Natural gas and solar also feature in North Carolina's project activity. In Reidsville, NTE Energy (Saint Augustine, Florida) will kick off construction on a 500-MW combined cycle power plant in the upcoming quarter. Gemma Power Systems is providing EPC. Near Grandy, North Carolina, EcoPlexus Solar Solutions Incorporated (Durham, North Carolina) is soon to begin work on a 20-MW solar farm, which will be built on a former golf course. The facility will use crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels on a fixed-tilt system. Construction on the $40 million project will be completed in the fourth quarter. In South Carolina, Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) will upgrade four hydro turbines at its 1,064-MW Bad Creek pumped-storage hydropower facility in Salem. The project entails replacing the pump turbine runners and rewinding the four generators to increase generating capacity by 200 MW. Voith Hydro Incorporated (York, Pennsylvania) is providing design-build services. The project has an estimated TIV of $200 million and is expected to be completed in late 2022. In Maryland, Coronal LLC plans to kick off construction on a 20-MW solar facility near Woodsboro. The facility will use a single-axis horizontal tracking system consisting of 82,000 solar modules. Triad Engineering Incorporated (Hagerstown, Maryland) is the project consultant. The project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter.
