Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Growing interest in the Marcellus Shale is driving much of the project spending in Pennsylvania, especially in its rapidly expanding Power Industry. Industrial Info is tracking 461 active and unconfirmed projects in Pennsylvania that have a total investment value (TIV) of more than $42 billion. Construction on 224 projects worth $8.81 billion is expected to kick off within the next 12 months.

Close to 80% of the TIV--about $34 billion--is related to 183 projects that are still in the planning stages, which means that plenty of factors could increase, decrease or eliminate the expected spending. About $4.7 billion worth of projects--although a greater number, 212--have reached construction stages, and 61 projects worth $4 billion are in engineering stages.
Among the biggest drivers of project construction in Pennsylvania is the Marcellus Shale, which is one of many geographic areas that are seeing increased attention amid the boom in U.S. natural gas production. Two major gas-to-liquids (GTL) projects in the planning stages are EmberClear Corporation's (Moosic, Pennsylvania) $1 billion plant in Sinking Spring, and Marcellus GTL LLC's (Gilberton, Pennsylvania) $200 million plant in Duncansville.

The Sinking Spring project is to be built near a Sunoco (NYSE:SUN) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) terminal and will produce 12,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) of 87-octane gasoline. The Duncansville project will have a processing capacity of 20 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas, and a production capacity of 2,800 BBL/d of gasoline and propane.
For more information, see May 20, 2014, article - Marcellus Gas Transforms Chemical Processing, Gas Production Industries.
The Power Industry accounts for 90 projects and about two-thirds of Pennsylvania's industrial spending, with $15 billion attributed to PPL Corporation's (NYSE:PPL) (Allentown, Pennsylvania) planned construction of the first unit of the Bell Bend Nuclear Power Station in Berwick, Pennsylvania. The 1,600-megawatt (MW) project, which is being built adjacent to the existing Susquehanna Nuclear Station, involves the construction of an AREVA Evolutionary pressurized water reactor with a steam turbine generator set. Construction is not expected to kick off until the second quarter of 2018.

In a distant second place is the Oil & Gas Transmission Industry, which has 61 projects with a TIV of $3.26 billion. One of these projects, Kinder Morgan Incorporated's (NYSE:KMI) (Houston, Texas) planned, $170 million pipeline conversion, is another example of the Marcellus' growing impact. The project is expected to convert 153 miles of 24-inch-diameter transmission line from natural gas to natural gas liquids (Y-grade), with an initial capacity of 150,000 BBL/d. If all goes according to schedule, it will kick off in about a year.

The Chemical Processing Industry is in third with 44 projects valued at $3 billion, but is facing infrastructure-related challenges. For more information, see June 17, 2014, article - Pennsylvania Leads U.S. Northeast in Chemical Investments, but Key Project May Be in Doubt.
All other industries combined have 266 projects with a TIV of $8.06 billion.
