Delta Copper Project in Chile Receives Environmental Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Empresa Nacional de Mineria (ENAMI) (Santiago, Chile) has recently received environmental approval from the Chilean Regional Environmental Commission for its Delta copper project, worth about $40 million. The project is 15 kilometers north of the city of Ovalle in Limari Province of Chile's Coquimbo Region. Delta aims to exploit the Panulcillo copper deposit and construct a concentrator plant to produce 60,000 tons per month of copper concentrate and a heap leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning plant to produce 200 tons per month of copper cathodes.

ENAMI now awaits approval from the Chilean Copper Commission and the Chilean Ministry of Planning and will select an engineering, procurement and construction firm by March 2008 in order to start construction by May 2008. The company expects to complete the project by the end of 2009. During the construction stage, the project will create about 2,000 direct jobs, and once operational, the project will create about 900 direct and indirect jobs. Besides processing its own deposit, the new plants will also process oxide and sulfide minerals from about 780 minor miners that today process their ore in the Ovalle plant, owned by ENAMI. ENAMI's mission is to promote small and midsize mining companies in Chile in order to access international markets.
