PDVSA to Build Cabruta Refinery in Venezuela

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to authorities, Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) will build a new refinery in Venezuela, to be called the Cabruta Refinery. Construction is to begin after PDVSA finishes the concept engineering; construction is scheduled to kick off in 2013, adding 400,000 barrels of oil production per day.

The refinery, which is part of Venezuela's new energy policy, will be in the borough of Las Mercedes del Llano, on the banks of the Orinoco River border with Guarico and Bolivar. The refinery will become an oil-fired power plant in the south of the country, which will be a great economic growth since the refinery will lead to the construction for other industrial facilities to process petroleum products.

PDVSA continues under the preliminary design for the Cabruta refinery and is seeking a financial partner for a joint venture to perform the extended basic engineering, and later to select the engineering and construction firm that will perform the detailed engineering and the construction of the plant.

Some of the units that are going to be built are the atmospheric distillation, vacuum, hydrocracker, vacuum gasoil and delayed coker units.

PDVSA will invest $6 billion in the construction of the Cabruta refinery, which will have a production capacity of 400,000 barrels of heavy and extra-heavy crude oil from the Orinoco Belt region per day. Most of its fuels, such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, will be used to meet the demand of exports to the rest of the world. The completion of this plant is scheduled for 2017.
