Leading UK Carbon-Capture Storage Project Advances
One of the U.K.'s most promising carbon-capture and storage projects is building quick support following a decision by BOC Group to take a 15% stake in the Don Valley Project. ...
Located in Hatfield, South Yorkshire, and owned by 2Co Energy (London, England), Don Valley is a planned 650-megawatt (MW) integrated gas combined-cycle (IGCC) plant that will be designed to capture up to 90% of its 5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. The power station will cost about 3.6 billion ($4.7 billion) to construct, with work expected to kick off next year. When commissioned at the end of 2016, Don Valley will be capable of generating enough power for approximately 1 million homes.
BOC and its parent company, Linde AG (ETR:LIN) (Munich, Germany), are being contracted to supply the carbon-capture technology and air separation units (ASUs) for the CCS plant, which will be built at Stainforth in the Humber Gateway. In April, Korean giant Samsung C&T Corporation (SEO:000830) (Seoul, South Korea) secured the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Don Valley project It also agreed to take a 15% share in it. "Moving quickly to full commercial-scale carbon capture will be vital for the U.K.--not only in meeting our own carbon reduction targets, but also for demonstrating the U.K.'s global leadership in developing and using these critical technologies," said Mike Huggon, the managing director of BOC. "BOC is delighted to take a significant stake in the Don Valley Power Project at such an important time for carbon capture in the U.K."
Lewis Gillies, the chief executive of 2Co Energy Limited, added: "BOC and the Linde Group are leading players in gases and clean energy technologies, and will bring world-class engineering and operations expertise to the project. The Humber Gateway is the best location in the world to kick-start a global carbon capture industry, and BOC's involvement further underpins the financial and technical integrity of the U.K.'s leading CCS project, following Samsung's landmark investment earlier this year."
