Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The world's largest wind turbine has been installed at the Burbo Bank Extension offshore windfarm in the U.K.
Danish developer DONG Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) said that the installation marks the first time that the 8-megawatt (MW) V164 turbine from Vestas Wind Systems A/S (OMX:VWS) (Aarhus, Denmark) has been used offshore. Burbo Bank Extension, located eight kilometres (km) off the U.K.'s west coast in Liverpool Bay, will sport 32 of the turbines which will be capable of generating 258 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power 230,000 households when it is commissioned in the first half of next year. Each turbine stands 195 metres tall--more than twice the height of London's Big Ben.
Claus Bøjle Møller, project director at DONG Energy, said: "The installation of this world-first technology shows that DONG Energy is leading the way in offshore wind energy. By using bigger turbines, we're able to bring down the cost of providing clean, renewable energy to homes around the U.K. This first turbine is a significant achievement for the project, and we're looking forward to producing the first green energy later this year."
Earlier this year, DONG sold a 50% stake in the project for £660 million ($940 million), with 25% going to Danish pension provider PKA (Hellerup) and another 25% to KIRKBI A/S (Billund), the parent company of the LEGO Group. DONG and KIRKBI have worked together before, commissioning the Borkum Riffgrund I offshore windfarm project in the German North Sea last year. The 312-MW windfarm was the first in Germany for the Danish energy company and the first large-scale energy project for LEGO. For additional information, see October 20, 2015, article--DONG, LEGO Build First German Windfarm.
In July, Industrial Info reported that the Vestas' 8-MW turbine was the first chosen by the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) for deployment at Europe's largest planned testing centre for next-generation offshore turbines in Scotland.
