Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Williams Partners LP (NYSE:WPZ) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) began construction last week on the greenfield portion of its Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline project in Pennsylvania, with a pair of compressor stations in the works. Williams expects to begin construction on the pipeline itself as early as next week. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $900 million in active projects associated with Atlantic Sunrise, and more than $1.55 billion in other projects from Williams Partners and Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa).

The 183-mile pipeline, which is an expansion of the existing Transco Natural Gas Pipeline, will link the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern U.S. markets with the booming Marcellus Shale. The 1.7 billion-cubic-foot-per-day expansion will comprise eight different construction spreads, according to a press release from Williams, six of which will cover eight Pennsylvania counties. Williams says required federal and state permits are in place for all components of the project.

Site preparation is underway on two compressor stations: the $60 million Station 610 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, and the $20 million Station 605 in Montrose, Pennsylvania. Each facility features a pair of electric-driven compressor gas packages from General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) with total outputs of 40,000 and 30,000 horsepower, respectively. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Station 610 and Station 605.

Next week, Williams expects to begin construction on the two major greenfield segments of the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline: the $283 million Central Penn South line, which runs from Lancaster County to Columbia County, and the $200 million Central Penn North line, which runs from Columbia County to Susquehanna County. The segments run roughly 122 miles and 53 miles, respectively. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Central Penn South and Central Penn North.

Williams estimates the construction on the pipeline and compressor stations will last about 10 months, weather permitting. Other compressor-station projects set to be completed in that time include:
  • $45 million in additions at Station 520 in Salladasburg, Pennsylvania; see Industrial Info's project report
  • $45 million in additions at Station 517 in Benton, Pennsylvania; see Industrial Info's project report
  • $15 million in additions at Station 190 in Ellicott City, Maryland; see Industrial Info's project report
Williams began partial service of Atlantic Sunrise earlier this month, after it received key permits from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The active portion delivers up to 400,000 dekatherms of gas from the company's mainline Transco pipeline facilities.
