Released October 23, 2023 | GALWAY, IRELAND

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--French green hydrogen specialist Lhyfe (Nantes, France) has started construction on a hydrogen production plant in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany.

The plant will be the largest in the Baden-Württemberg region and the company's largest production plant outside of France. It will have an installed capacity of 10 megawatts (MW) and be capable of producing up to 4 tonnes per day of green hydrogen. The plant, which will use renewable electricity secured from hydro, wind and solar power-purchase agreements, will be commissioned in the second half of 2024. The hydrogen will be used partly in the "H2-Aspen" industrial park and at a JET H2 hydrogen filling station. Earlier this year, Lhyfe signed a supply agreement with JET H2 Energy--a joint venture by Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) (Houston, Texas) and H2 Energy Europe (Zurich, Switzerland), which aims to build 10 hydrogen stations in Germany and Denmark to supply private cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles and buses. The new hydrogen plant forms part of the HyFIVE (Hydrogen For Innovative Vehicles) project and is partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

"The project demonstrates the economic viability of hydrogen solutions in the transport and industry sectors and also supports the state of Baden-Württemberg in its efforts to become a model region for the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure," explained Luc Graré, head of central & eastern Europe at Lhyfe. "We very much welcome the fact that the state and the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd want to implement their ambitious goals for a hydrogen economy based on renewable energies."

Richard Arnold, mayor of Schwäbisch Gmünd, added: "Through corporations like this, Schwäbisch Gmünd is developing into a model region for the nationwide development of a hydrogen and filling station network as a central supply infrastructure."

Germany is becoming an increasingly important market for Lhyfe. The company is working with the port authority at Duisburg to build the first green hydrogen production plant in Duisburg harbor, Europe's largest inland port. The proposed plant will have a production capacity of up to 20 MW, producing up to 8 tonnes of green hydrogen per day for use in the port's vehicles, local hydrogen buses and a refuse collection fleet.
