Akron, Ohio, and Greenstar Recycling Team Up for a Plastics-into-Oil Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The city of Akron, Ohio, and Greenstar Recycling & Shredding (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) have combined forces to construct a plastics-into-oil recycling plant in Akron, which is Ohio's fifth-largest metropolitan area.

Akron awarded the contract to Greenstar for processing the weekly curb-side plastic recyclables. Greenstar will build the state-of-the-art, single-stream recycling center in a 195,000-square-foot former hangar. Single-stream means that there is no need to pre-sort recyclables, as it is done automatically.

Vadxx Energy (Cleveland, Ohio) will be the technology provider. Akros Equipment Company LLC (Akron) was contracted to provide the equipment to convert 12,000 tons per year of plastic feedstock into about 80,000 barrels annually of synthetic oil. Construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of next year. When completed about nine months later, the facility is projected to employ 45 people and be a hub for recycling and recovery activities in the area.
