Aluar to Increase Aluminum Production in Argentina

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) By the end of June 2007, Aluar Aluminio Argentino SAIC, the Argentinean aluminum producer, is to start operations of the $800 million first stage of the expansion project at Puerto Madryn plant located in Chubut province, Argentina.

Aluar produces primary aluminum and fabricated products used in the transportation industry, packaging, electrical conductors and building. This Argentine company owns the following plants: the rolling and extrusion plant, located in Abasto, Buenos Aires province and the aluminum reduction plant, for the production of aluminum and two semi-fabricated products plants in Puerto Madryn. Aluar exports 60% of its production; the remaining 40% is used to cover Argentine demand for primary aluminum.

The project at Aluar’s Puerto Madryn plant aims at increasing the company’s current 280,000 tons per year production capacity to 400,000 tons per year. In order to do so, the company will build the third anode baking furnace to produce more anodes, expand the foundry sections and milling area, update the anode rod area and also build an alumina silo. According to Aluar authorities, the expansion of Puerto Madryn plant will allow the Argentine company increase its exports by 85%.
