Arizona Sees First Commercial Windfarm

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--This month, Iberdrola Renewables (Portland, Oregon), a subsidiary of Spanish power builder and developer Iberdrola SA (OTC:IBDRY) (Bilbao), commissioned and brought online Dry Lake Windfarm, Arizona's first commercial windfarm, which has a nameplate capacity of 63 megawatts (MW). The windfarm is in Holbrook, Navajo County, Arizona, on both federal and residential properties.

Construction of the Dry Lake Windfarm began around the first quarter of 2009. This windfarm consists of 30 Suzlon 2.1-MW wind turbines. At maximum capacity, this project will provide electricity to 250 homes per megawatt generated, or approximately 15,000 homes.

Salt River Project (SRP) officials and the Arizona Public Service Company will be buying the output generated by Dry Lake Windfarm. SRP has committed to a 20-year power purchase agreement with Iberdrola.

D.H. Blattner & Sons Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) was selected to be the engineering, procurement, and construction firm for this project.
