Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 1 at Western Arizona's Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station experienced difficulties on Thursday morning. A problem was detected in the main steam isolation valve. Officials immediately reduced the unit's power to 60% (524 megawatts) and will leave it at that rate until the problem is corrected.
The station's Unit 3 is in a refueling outage, which is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is the only large nuclear power plant in the world that is not located near a large body of water. The site sits on 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) of land near Tonopah, Arizona, and it consists of three pressurized water reactors, each with an original capacity to produce 1.27 gigawatts of electric power.
Ownership in Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station is shared among several companies. The Arizona Public Service Company (APS) owns 29.1% of the station and operates the power plant. Other major owners include the Salt River Project (17.5%), the El Paso Electric Company (NYSE:EE) (15.8%), Southern California Edison (NYSE:SCE-PD) (15.8%), PNM Resources (NYSE:PNM) (10.2%), the Southern California Public Power Authority (5.9%), and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (5.7%).
