Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). As the largest American-owned cement company and the fifth largest cement manufacturer in the U.S., Ash Grove Cement Company (Overland Park, Kansas) is a leader in capital spending at its nine cement plants and lime operations in the U.S. The company is planning more than $500 million in capital and maintenance projects, scheduled to begin construction in the 2007-2008 time period.

The first major capital project scheduled, and the largest in magnitude, will be a grassroot, $250 million cement manufacturing plant and limestone quarry on the Moapa Indian Reservation in Clark County, Nevada. Ash Grove hopes to award a turnkey engineering and construction firm for the project by March 2007, with construction to begin by late 2007. When constructed, the Moapa plant will be only the second cement plant operating in the state of Nevada. Eagle Materials, Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) operates the Nevada Cement Company in Fernley, Nevada. Eagle has its own plans to expand and should start construction on a major expansion about the same time as Ash Grove. For details on Eagle Materials expansion see related May 22, 2006 news article - Eagle Materials Banking on Cement Manufacturing Expansion Growth Trend.

As it stands now, after the Moapa project, Ash Grove Cement will develop a $190 million modernization and expansion of its Foreman, Arkansas plant. The Foreman project will involve a complete modernization of the one million ton per year plant, including replacement of three wet process kilns with new dry process technology. Ash Grove performed a similar modernization and expansion at its Chanute, Kansas plant in 2001. Industrial Info first reported on the Foreman project in 1999 and the Chanute project in 1998.
