Australia's Nickel Industry Gears Up to Meet Demand Surge

Western Areas' Odysseus underground nickel mine is under development and expected to be operational by the end of the year. The company also is working on a feasibility study for its New Morning open-pit mine at the Flying Fox operation.
Ardea Resources has accelerated its Kalgoorlie nickel project to a definitive feasibility study, while Oz Minerals is due to complete its West Musgrave nickel project's pre-feasibility study by the third quarter of this year.
Each year, Minara Resources Limited and BHP Nickel West spend millions of dollars on maintenance to keep the Murrin Murrin Nickel Refinery and Kwinana Nickel West Refinery operational.
BHP Group Ltd. (Melbourne, Australia) announced on July 22 it signed a nickel supply agreement with electric vehicle and battery storage system manufacturer Tesla Incorporated (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Palo Alto, California). BHP said it will supply Tesla with nickel from its Nickel West operations.
