BASF Adds Catalyst-Manufacturing Capacity to Alabama Plant

The company is adding production capacity to its Huntsville, Alabama, plant. BASF is adding a new coater and other production equipment to boost the plant's silver nitrate catalyst manufacturing capacity. Silver nitrate catalyst is used for oxidation of ethylene and other olefins.

The turnkey engineering and construction management for this project is being done by a locally headquartered Alabama company, Hargrove and Associates Incorporated (Mobile), which presently operates in a 10-state range on projects mostly involving the broad industrial sector. SIMCO Construction Incorporated (Tacoma, Washington) is handling the general-contractor role from its Decatur, Alabama, office.

The civil construction for the project began in January of this year and is on a fast-track schedule. The mechanical construction phase of the expansion is planned to kick off this month. The mechanical contractor for this project is Hubbard and Drake (Decatur, Alabama), while the electrical work has been awarded to Garnet Electric of Sheffield, Alabama. The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2009, with a startup target of June 2009.
