Basin Electric Readies to Meet Summer Demand with No Sweat

Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Bismarck, North Dakota) has completed construction and start-up testing of the $35 million, 95-megawatt Groton Peaking Project located in Groton, South Dakota. Construction for the project started in August 2005, and was completed this spring. The project involved the installation of a 95-megawatt GE Power Systems LMS100 combustion turbine generator (one of the first applications to utilize this turbine model) operating in a simple cycle peaking configuration. Basin Electric is set to commence full commercial operation of the new plant by the end of this month.

The plant will use natural gas as the primary fuel and have the capability to use distillate fuel oil as a back-up source. Groton also features synchronous condensing capability to ensure the supply of reactive power to support the transmission grid.

GE Energy, located in Norcross, Georgia, provided the turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (E+P+C) services for the project and The Industrial Company (TIC), based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, acted as the general contractor for the project.
