Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). EaglePicher Technologies LLC (Joplin, Missouri), a subsidiary of EaglePicher Incorporated (Inkster, Michigan), is preparing to begin equipment installation in its newest plant in Joplin, Missouri. Crossland Construction Company Incorporated of Columbus, Kansas is the general contractor, which is currently constructing the 24,000 square-foot building. The building shell is expected to be completed in early 2007 with the equipment installation beginning immediately after. The plant is to be fully operational by the end of 2007. The company plans to employ 100 people at the plant within three to five years.
The new plant will be used for the development and production of Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) cells and batteries for U.S. Military critical applications. The primary focus will be on high voltage and high current Li-Ion batteries used by the military for land, sea, air, space and special operations. Li-Ion technology is recognized to provide higher levels of energy and longer cycle life with lower weight and smaller sizes than more commonly used lead-acid, nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cad), or nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. EaglePicher is one of the few Lithium-Ion battery manufactures located in the U.S.
Beginning in 1843, EaglePicher has become the leading producer of batteries and energetic devices. The company initially manufactured paint pigments and merged with a lead mining company, this partnership began the process of transforming the company into an industry leader offering the most advanced products and technology of the time. The company began to use the materials mined to develop new products such as storage batteries and the worlds first transistor. Through diversification and acquisitions the company is now a leading provider of energy storage devices for the defense, space and commercial industries. EaglePicher Technologies offers a wide range of battery technology including thermal, nickel hydrogen, lithium carbonmonofluoride, lithium thionyl chloride, lithium manganese dioxide, lithium sulfur dioxide, lithium ion, reserve lithium oxyhalide, custom battery assemblies and silver zinc batteries. They also provide other energy products and pyrotechnic devices for the defense industry, as well as advanced battery chargers and other power solutions for business, industrial and recreational applications.
