Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bayer AG (PINK:BAYRY) (Leverkusen, Germany) and Bayer CropScience LP (Durham, North Carolina) have begun construction on a corn and soybean research and development greenhouse in Durham, North Carolina. The company currently operates three 4,000-square-foot greenhouses at the site, and the expansion will add about 60,000 square feet of growing and research space.

The two-story structure will have 30,000 square feet of growing space, 2,400 square feet of growing chambers and beds, and an automated irrigation system on the top level, and a state-of-the-art laboratory, seed storage space, and seed-handling conveyor systems on the lower level.

The estimated $20 million project will be designed for research on genetically modified and traditional corn and soybean seed to increase yield for food crops. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2011.

The expansion could be the segway for development of a biodiesel plant that will be located at Bayer CropScience's industrial park in Institute, West Virginia. Emerald Biofuels LLC (Golf, Illinois) is currently wrapping up financing for a $45 million, 40 million-gallon-per-year biodiesel plant.

The plant will process oils from soybeans and other seed crops into biodiesel. The company will utilize some of the existing on-site equipment in its process. Construction is expected to get under way this summer and be wrapped up by the fall of 2012.
