Brascan Increases Generating Capacity by 47.8% by acquiring 488MW from Ontario Power Generation

The following is an advisory by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Brascan Corporation (NYSE:BSX & TSE:BNN)(Toronto, Ontario) is acquiring four hydroelectric power stations on the Mississagi River, east of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, from Ontario Power Generation (TSE:OPG)(Toronto, Ontario). The acquisition will increase company generating capacity by 47.8% from 1,020 mega-watts (MW) to 1,508MW.

Brascan will take ownership of three plants near Thessalon, Ontario and one near Iron Bridge, Ontario when the deal is finalized in May of this year.

The three hydroelectric stations located in the Thessalon area, include; Aubrey Falls, George W Rayner, and Wells plants. Aubrey Falls is a two unit 162MW station that utilizes Dominion Engineering Works (DEW) vertical Francis turbines and General Electric (Canada) (GEC) generators. The units were constructed between 1966 and 1969. The George W Rayner station is a two-unit 46MW station that utilizes Allis-Chalmers vertical Francis turbines with Canadian Westinghouse (WEC) generators and was built between 1947 and 1950. The Wells hydroelectric station has two units totaling 239MW, and utilizing DEW vertical Francis turbines and GEC generators and was built from 1968 to 1970.

The Iron Bridge hydroelectric station is known as Red Rock Falls, a two-unit station that uses vertical fixed-blade Allis-Chalmers turbines and GEC generators and was built from 1958 to 1961.
