Brazil's Zihuatanejo do Brasil Adds Bagasse-Fired Unit at Rio Formoso Sugar Plant

A power unit will be added to increase the powerhouse capacity by 25 megawatts (MW). The energy produced will be used to supply the factory needs while the overrun will be sold to the grid. The cogeneration unit construction kickoff is scheduled for June 2010. Zihuatanejo do Brasil selected Areba Koblitz (Recife, Brazil) to perform the engineering, procurement and construction. Areba Koblitz supplies turnkey services for the construction of biomass and small hydroelectric power plants since 1975.

Zihuatanejo do Brasil Acucar e Alcool Ltda's sugar plant, called Cucau, is located in Rio Formoso, Pernambuco State. The company is an agro-industrial manufacturer dedicated to processing sugarcane to obtain sugar and fuel-grade ethanol since 1895. The company's crushing capacity is about 1.4 million tons per year, with an output production of 150,000 tons of sugar and 21.5 million liters of ethanol and a current cogeneration capacity of 7 MW.
