Brookhaven National Lab: Fed's Capital Investment Nears $1 Billion With Construction Launch of Interdisciplinary Science Laboratory

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The small town of Upton, New York, owes its very existence to the U.S. government. Designated as the site of the U.S. Army's Camp Upton from 1917 to 1920, Upton was revitalized from 1940 to 1946, when its primary purpose was to serve as an induction center for draftees into WWII. After the war, in 1947, the U.S. government chose Upton as the location for the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). That decision has led to a proliferation of capital investment as the site has expanded from its original focus on nuclear research. The August 2010 construction kickoff of the $67 million Interdisciplinary Science Building will push active construction projects to a total investment value (TIV) of $995 million (source: Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database).

The first major project launched in the current round of construction and improvement at the site was the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS II). Team members on the massive project include HDR Engineering (Alexandria, Virginia) and Torcon Construction (Red Bank, New Jersey). Tracked by Industrial Info Resources since 2006, the federal stimulus program helped finally launch construction on the project in 2009. When complete in 2014, the NSLS II will feature a 392,000-square-foot building that will house a main accelerator ring of 2,560 feet with 3 billion electron volts.

At the other end of the financial Richter scale, is the $13.5 million Phase I renovation and upgrade of the existing science laboratories within the D-Wing of Building 815 and the E-Wing of Building 480. The project team includes Flad & Associates (Madison, Wisconsin) and Marson Contracting (Bronx, New York). The project began in late 2009 and should be completed next month.

Also helped by partial stimulus funding is next month's start of the Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB). The ISB is designed as a two-story, 90,000-square-foot Gold LEED-certified facility. Offering collaborative research areas to multiple scientific disciplines, construction of the ISB will be handled by E.W. Howell (Plainview, New York), with HDR Engineering as part of the project team. Construction should be completed in late 2012 or early 2013.

BNL employs approximately 3,000 scientists, engineers, technicians and support personnel, and hosts 4,000 guest investigators every year. Discoveries made at the lab have garnered seven Nobel Prizes. The laboratory has its own police station, fire department, and postal code (11973), and occupies a 5,265-acre site. BNL's current research targets include:
  • Nuclear and high-energy physics
  • Structural biology
  • Neurosciences and medical imaging
  • Physics and chemistry of materials
  • Environmental and energy research
  • Nonproliferation
