California's Kingbird Solar Power Plant Comes Online

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 40-megawatt (MW) Kingbird Solar Photovoltaic (PV) power plant, which is located in Kern County, California, began commercial operations last month.

The facility was originally developed by First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) but was acquired by 8point3 Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ:CAFD) (San Jose, California) in April. The project is located on more than 300 acres of agricultural land and uses First Solar's thin film solar modules to provide renewable energy to the local grid. Power generated by the Kingbird project will be sold to member cities of the Southern California Public Power Authority and the City of Pasadena under separate 20-year power purchase agreements.

Cupertino Electric (San Jose) completed the year-long construction project in May. The project had a total investment value of $80 million. 8point3 Energy Partners will own the facility, and First Solar will be responsible for operation and maintenance.
