Calpine 300 MW Calgary Energy Center Starts Commercial Operation

Calpine Power Income Fund (TSE: CF.UN) (Calgary, Alberta), managed by Calpine Canada Power Limited a division of Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN) (San Jose, California) announced that they had begun commercial operation at Calgary Energy Centre (Calgary, Alberta) on March 31, 2003 bringing total generation capacity in Canada to 575-megawatts (MW). Calpine's other generation in Canada consists of an interest in a 50MW Whitby Cogeneration plant in Whitby, Ontario and the 225MW Island Cogeneration plant in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Calgary Energy Centre cost about $204 million and is a natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plant that consists of a Siemens Westinghouse (SWPC) combustion turbine/generator 501FG, a Deltak HRSG (heat recovery steam generator) and a Fuji Heavy Industry steam turbine/generator. To help reduce nitrogen oxide emissions it has a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit. The plant is located in the northeastern part of Calgary.
