Canadian Citric Acid Producer Plans for Expansion

Jungbunzlauer Incorporated (Newton, Massachusetts), a subsidiary of Jungbunzlauer G.m.b.H., is planning a second-phase expansion of its only North American citric acid plant, located in Port Colborne, Ontario. Jungbunzlauer started commercial operations of this plant almost two years ago, in the late spring of 2002. The plant is located near the wet corn milling plant of Casco Incorporated (Etobicoke, Ontario), which provides the plant its liquid dextrose feedstock.

Jungbunzlauer is expecting capital approval of this estimated $10 million expansion in December, and its own corporate technical group will complete engineering and planning. Construction is expected to begin as early as next April and includes the installation of new columns, product storage, utilities, and control system additions.

Traditionally citric acid's primary use has been in beverages and food products. The use of citric acid in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics has continued to increase in recent years and has supported the addition of new merchant capacity. Currently Jungbunzlauer is the only producer of citric acid in Canada and joins the ranks of only three other producers across all of North America.
