Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Canadys Power Station recently became the latest coal-powered facility to be closed in South Carolina. In response to more stringent environmental regulations, South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) (Cayce, South Carolina), a subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE:SCG), closed the plant on November 6 to meet stricter emissions standards that are set to take effect in 2015.
One of the station's units closed in late 2012. The utility initially planned to convert the remaining units to natural gas. But after analyzing the economics of the situation, it decided to close the 50-year-old plant.
South Carolina Public Service Authority's (Santee Cooper) (Moncks Corner, South Carolina) Dolphus M. Grainger Generating Station was closed at the end of 2012, also citing stricter environmental regulations. The plant is planned to be dismantled and demolished by 2016.
Also, in October 2012, Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) closed its H.B. Robinson Power Station in Darlington County. The plant is scheduled to begin dismantlement and demolition this quarter.
"Decommissioning of Canadys Station is expected to take a number of years," SCE&G said in a press release, "and will involve demolishing the plant, closing all ash and wastewater treatment ponds, and constructing a permitted dry ash storage facility onsite to store material which exceeds recycling demands."
SCE&G plans to maintain ownership of the site.
In the face of coal plant closures, SCE&G and Santee Cooper are set to expand nuclear operations. The utilities plan to add two more units to the co-owned Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station in Fairfield County.
In a press release, Steve Byrne, chief operating officer of SCE&G, said the closure of SCE&G's coal facilities and the new nuclear units will help the company meet new environmental standards and better balance its generation portfolio.
