Capital Projects Requiring New Dryers or Dryer Upgrades Represent a Significant Opportunity for Equipment Vendors

Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) has identified nearly 400 North American capital projects planned to kick off construction in the next eighteen months that include new dryers or dryer upgrades in the scope of work. Dryers play a key role in many industrial processes ranging from the preparation of feedstock, refinement, packaging and preparation of product, to name a few. These projects are planned at 371 unique plant sites, with construction for some projects beginning this month, although the peak in construction activity will take place late this summer and early in the fourth quarter.

These projects span nine of the twelve industries researched and monitored by Industrial Info in North America. The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry will be home to the largest number of projects with 159, followed by the Metals & Metals Industry with 53 projects. Other industries with a significant level of activity include those in the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI), Synthetic Fuels, and Pulp and Paper, which combined represent 110 projects.

Geographically, there are three market regions that offer the best opportunity for dryer equipment suppliers and service providers. The Great Lakes, Midwest and Southeast market regions will be home to almost half of the project activity. The majority of the demand in the Midwest is driven by the large number of projects in the Food & Beverage and Synthetic Fuels Industries to process grains, corn and related crops to support the large demand for ethanol from the region’s resources. In the Great Lakes region, almost half of the project activity comes from the increasingly large population of Pharmaceutical & Biotech plants.

One of the more notable dryer projects planned in the near future is the addition of a spray dryer in Taylorsville, Mississippi, being studied by Georgia-Pacific Resins, Incorporated (Atlanta, Georgia). Construction for this nearly $10 million project is planned to begin this fall. Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) (Midland, Michigan) is planning to spend nearly $7 million for the retrofit of an existing tray dryer, installation of a new rotary dryer and several related upgrades to increase the capacity of dry calcium chloride flake.
