Cash Minerals Evaluates Coal Mine, Power Plant, and Terminal in the Yukon

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Cash Minerals Limited (Toronto, Ontario), along with consultant, Norwest Corporation (Calgary, Alberta), is preparing a bankable feasibility study for construction of a new coal mine in the Yukon Territory. The proposed mine is located about 20 kilometers west of Klondike Highway near the town of Braeburn in the Yukon Territories.

The company is studying a 1.2 million ton per year bituminous coal mine with a 290-ton per hour wash plant.

Cash Minerals is working with the First Nations and the Yukon government to move the project forward.

The coal mine and associated facilities would require about 8-megawatts of electricity to operate. This would be provided from the local grid. A transmission line is nearby paralleling the coal property.

A 40-megawatt mine mouth coal-fired power plant could be built on First Nation’s land if it can get the backing of the Yukon government. This may prove to be a tough proposition, since the Yukon government is backing a plan for ten small hydroelectric plants to supply electricity to the growing mining concerns in the area. However, the First Nation’s have indicated that they may favor coal-fired generation, as opposed to damming up more rivers in the area for hydroelectric use.

The company is also studying the feasibility of reopening a closed ore terminal in Skagway and retrofitting it for coal storage and distribution to Asian destinations. The terminal, closed in 1998, is owned by the state of Alaska. Coal would be trucked about 280 kilometers from the mine site to the Skagway terminal, where it would be distributed to Asian destinations.
