Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chile is closing new partnerships and opening its internal market amid the international tariff war that could affect its industry.
Chile's minister of mines, Aurora Williams, is working to expand the nation's presence worldwide through meetings in India, ties with China, and preparing for the impact of Donald Trump's trade war.
Williams started April with meetings in New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai to strengthen ties and partnerships with India and to attract investments to Chile. As part of her trip, Williams met with Kishan Reddy, India's minister of mines, to discuss cooperation areas between the nations.
The move to renewable energies and the increasing demand for strategic minerals such as copper and lithium is attracting international attention to Chile, the world's largest copper producer and the second-largest lithium producer.
Among the main takeaways from the India trip was the start of a discussion on an economic partnership agreement between the nations that will also include cooperation on critical minerals and supply chains.
"India is an interesting country for the supply of critical minerals. They have created a national mission for critical minerals, and in conversations with the Indian Ministry of Mines, we have narrowed our positions regarding their interest in copper, lithium, and molybdenum," mentioned Williams about her visit.
Similarly, at the CESCO week in Santiago, Williams highlighted that collaborations in mining will be key to facing the world's growing challenges.
Besides its evolving relationship with India, Chile has maintained stable ties with China, the country's largest copper importer.
The strengthening of Chile's relations in the mining sector will be key amid the growing trade war between the United States and China, which has sent markets unravelling and copper prices crashing.
In recent weeks, the Chilean government announced that a team was preparing to study the impact of possible U.S. tariffs on copper. The final results of the analysis will be published months from now.
The U.S. is among the top three importers of Chilean refined copper.
However, the country expects copper demand to remain, though prices will face volatility as the trade war continues.
In February, Cochilco, the Chilean mining authority, expected copper prices to be at US$4.25 a pound in 2025 and 2026. However, a recent article by the Wall Street Journal suggests that the mining authority will expects copper prices between US$3.90 and US$4 per pound in 2025.
