Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In 2017, China's overall social power consumption reached 6.3 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh), an increase of 6.6% year over year, which was1.6 percentage points higher than the previous year, according to China's National Energy Administration.
For different sectors, the growth mainly came from the secondary industries (manufacturing), the services industry and household consumption. In 2017, power consumption in the primary industries (agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, and oil & gas production) reached 115.5 billion kWh, an increase of 7.3% from the previous year; that of the secondary industries (manufacturing) reached 4.44 trillion kWh, an increase of 5.5%; that of the tertiary industries (services) reached 881.4 billion kWh, an increase of 10.7%; and that of the household of urban and township residents reached 869.5 billion kWh, an increase of 7.8%.
In 2017, China's investment in power-generation construction largely declined. In 2017, China's total investment in power-generation construction totalled $41.54 billion, a drop of 20.8% from the same period in 2016. Of this, hydropower investment amounted to $9.51 billion, a slight increase of 0.1%; thermal-power investment reached $11.38 billion, a drop of 33.9%; and nuclear-power investments were $6.08 billion, a drop of 21.6%. In the same period, China's investment in grid construction was $81.77 billion, a drop of 2.2%.
Despite the decline in power-generation investments, driven by solar power, the total installed capacity of newly commissioned power plants in China reached 133.72 gigawatts (GW) in 2017. Of this, the installed capacity of hydropower added 12.87 GW, an increase of 9.2% over the previous year; that of thermal power increased by 45.78 GW, a drop of 9.3% from the previous year's growth.
As of the end of December 2017, China's installed capacity of power equipment in plants with capacities of more than 6 megawatts (MW) reached 1,777.03 GW, an increase of 7.6% from the same period in 2016. The installed capacity of hydropower, thermal power, nuclear power, on-grid wind power and on-grid solar power reached 341.19 GW, 1,106.04 GW, 35.82 GW, 163.67 GW and 130.25 GW, an increase of 2.7%, 4.3%, 6.5%, 10.5% and 68.9%, respectively.
In 2017, China's average accumulated utilization of energy was 3,786 hours, a drop of 11 hours from the previous year. The average utilization of hydropower was 3,579 hours, a drop of 40 hours from the previous year, while that of thermal power reached 4,209 hours, an increase of 23 hours.
