Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Combustion Turbine 4 at Ecuador's Gonzalo Zevallos Thermal Plant remained offline because of a failure in its generator rotor. The plant went offline in 2006. The 172-megawatt (MW) Gonzalo Zevallos Thermal Plant is owned and operated by Electroguayas SA (Guayaquil, Ecuador), the largest thermal generating company in the country.
Unit 4 is equipped with a 28-MW Pratt & Whitney Aeroderivative Combustion Turbine, which was inaugurated in 1978. Pratt & Whitley (East Hartford, Connecticut) is a division of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) (Hartford, Connecticut). Brush Electrical Machines (Leicestershire, United Kingdom) manufactured the unit's generator and was responsible for performing the repairs on the damaged rotor. Plant officials already have installed the rotor, and they expect to resume the unit's operations by mid-August. Officials still need to do a few final adjustments in the control system and assemble some parts of the equipment. A year ago, the plant's engineering department attempted to restart the unit but was unsuccessful.
In about a year, the turbine will come down again for annual maintenance. By that time, Electroguayas may call for bids to replace eight combustion chambers.
Gonzalo Zevallos Thermal plant also owns two Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) (Tokyo) steam turbines with capacities of 73 MW each.
Electroguayas SA (Guayaquil, Ecuador) also owns the Trinitaria Thermal Plant (133 MW) and the Enrique Garcia Thermal Plant (102 MW).
