Construction Begins on Hawkeye Windfarm in Iowa

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--RPM Access LLC (RPMA) of West Des Moines, Iowa, recently began construction on a 37.5-megawatt (MW) wind generating facility in northern Iowa. The Hawkeye Windfarm, located near West Union, Iowa, has begun site preparation activities. The project is expected to begin commercial operations in the fall of 2012. Substation construction, laydown areas and onsite access roads are currently being established.

Construction of the Rippey Windfarm, near Grand Junction, Iowa, began in November. Rippey will utilize 20 Nordex N100 wind turbines, each with a generating capacity of 2.5 MW, giving the facility a nameplate generating capacity of 50 MW upon completion. Commercial operation of the Rippey Windfarm is expected to begin around the same time as Hawkeye.

Nordex is supplying turbines for the Rippey and Hawkeye windfarms and will deliver 35 of the N100 turbines this spring.

RPM Access recently the start of commercial operations of the 41-MW Elk Windfarm near Greeley, Iowa. M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, MN) was awarded the balance-of-plant contract for the project, which began operating earlier this month.

Central Iowa Power Cooperative is currently purchasing all the renewable electrical energy from the Elk Windfarm. Upon completion and commercial operation of the Hawkeye and Rippey Windfarms, Central Iowa Power Cooperative will purchase all electricity generated from both facilities.
