Construction Continues at Florida Power & Light's West County Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction is moving right along at Florida Power & Light's (Juno Beach, Florida) West County Energy Center, a natural-gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in West Palm Beach, Florida, that will cost almost $2 billion to build and will generate more than 3,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity when complete. Florida Power & Light is a subsidiary of FPL Group Incorporated (NYSE:FPL) (Juno Beach).

The state-of-the-art facility will be constructed in three phases. Total output of each phase will add approximately 1,267 MW, with each phase consisting of the installation of three 250-MW Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) (Tokyo, Japan) 501G combustion turbines, three Nooter-Erikson (St. Louis, Missouri) heat-recovery steam generators and one 517-MW Toshiba Plant Systems (TYO:1983) (Yokohama, Japan) steam turbine.

Construction of Phase I started in early 2008, and completion is scheduled for this summer. Phase II construction started early last summer and is slated for completion at the end of 2009. Site preparation for Phase III is currently being performed, and construction is set to start next month, with the units expected to be in operation by June of 2011.

Each unit is equipped with the best available and most advanced emission control equipment, including dry low-nitrogen-oxide burners and selective catalytic reduction systems.

The facility is being constructed by West County Power Partners (San Antonio, Texas), a consortium of companies, including Black & Veatch (Kansas City, Missouri) and Zachry Construction Corporation (San Antonio).
