Construction Continues for $70 Million Kentucky Coal-Fired Power Plant Project

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Construction resumed last June on a wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) scrubber system addition at the Kenneth C Coleman Power Station (Hawesville, Kentucky). The project had stopped in 2002 because of disputes with contractors. The 522-megawatt power plant is owned by the Big Rivers Electric Corporation (Henderson, Kentucky) and is operated by Western Kentucky Energy (Louisville, Kentucky).

The coal-fired facility consists of two 174-megawatt Siemens Westinghouse turbine and generator sets, with two Foster Wheeler front-fired dry bottom boilers, and one 174-megawatt General Electric turbine/generator, with a Riley Stoker rear-fired dry bottom boiler. All units came on line between 1969 and 1971.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, the primary contributor to acid rain, come mainly from the exhaust stacks of coal-fired power plants. Flue gas desulfurization systems are designed to remove sulfur dioxide from the flue gas by using a reagent, such as limestone, a liquid absorbent slurry. The key components of the scrubber system are the absorber tower and mixer. The scrubber creates gypsum, a wet slurry byproduct, which is sent to landfill for disposal or used in the construction industry as wallboard.

Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control Incorporated (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is the turn-key contractor for the project, after the original contract with FLS Airtech Incorporated (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) was terminated. Wheelabrator's role in the project is to install, supply, and design. Completion is expected in early 2006. The company is a world leader in providing turnkey services for air pollution control equipment.

Western Kentucky Energy also operates three other coal plants under a 25-year agreement with Big River Electric Corporation: The 960-megawatt coal-fired DB Wilson Power Station (Centertown, Kentucky), the 250-megawatt Green River Power Station (Central City, Kentucky), and the 170-megawatt RA Reid Power Station (Robards, Kentucky).
