Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction is currently under way for a $55 million expansion of Whirlpool Corporation's (NYSE:WHR) (Benton Harbor, Michigan) manufacturing plant in the city of Apodaca, just outside Monterrey, Mexico. The plant manufactures SUPSA (supermatic) refrigerators and horizontal-axis household washing machines.

Construction began in October and involves constructing a 75,000-square-foot building, as well as the installation of supporting equipment and new production lines. The expansion will also include equipment relocations from a Whirlpool plant closing in Evansville, Indiana. The expansion will increase the plant's production capacity and will enable the company to manufacture a broad line of refrigerating products between 18 and 23 cubic feet in size. Overall completion is slated for late spring/early summer 2010. Approximately 1,100 new jobs will be created.
